Suburban Chicks: having a hay day in the burbs

girls

Our girls are young, too young to produce eggs. Having been born in early May they will not mature enough to lay eggs til October (give or take). I must admit, prior to getting chickens I did need to look up the whole egg laying process – did the chicken need a rooster to lay an egg? Here in our township, although much to my surprise, we can own a rooster, the thought of being awakened at 4:30 in the morning was not appealing to me and I doubt my neighbors’ senses of humor would include awakening in the wee hours. The answer is no, the chicken does NOT need the rooster to lay eggs! They may need roosters for other reasons but I didn’t bother to look that one up.

Mabel, Clarabel, Camille, Bertha and Tillie are the newest members in our household. After spending almost two months (yes… two) in our kitchen we are happy to have them in the great outdoors. Snug as a bug in their luxury coop that keeps them cool and entertained throughout the day.

People have asked if we will eat our chickens and I am putting it out there now – again – we have named them. Seriously, when you name an animal it becomes a pet and the thought of eating a pet is not a line we wish to cross. The look of horror on some faces at the suggestion of eating their dog or cat provides a splutter and a ‘its not the same’ reply but when you get right down to it a pet with a name never belongs on the kitchen table.
